Moving off Tumblr

I’ve finalized setting up my new home. You can now find me on Dreamwidth! I’m linking my Twitter and Mastodon once again as well:

NEW BLOG: https://arynis.dreamwidth.org/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/Arynisu
Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@Arynis

This is where I’ll continue being active. I won’t be keeping my Tumblr updated. However, I will not delete my blog, so anything I didn’t port over to Dreamwidth can be still found here.

Looking back, I wasn’t particularly active on Tumblr. Still, I met many nice people on here. I’d like to thank everyone who followed me, sent me Asks or read my posts! Whether I’ll see y’all elsewhere or not, I wish everyone the best. :)

With Tumblr’s recent policy announcement, I am considering leaving Tumblr. While the changes don’t affect the content I posted, I know people who are affected by this. I also don’t want to support a platform that makes such decisions.

Right now, you can find me on Twitter and Mastodon:

Mastodon: Arynis@mastodon.social

I’m considering moving to either Pillowfort, Dreamwidth, or perhaps Wordpress, but I haven’t made up my mind yet. I’ll make another post when I’ve made a decision.

My Thoughts on Final Fantasy XIII

I used to know not much about the Fabula Nova Crystallis trilogy, save for it being bad and the development being a disaster. A friend of mine has been recommending me the series and showed me some arguments that ultimately got me interested in playing the games. I’ve finished the first game out of the three, so here are my thoughts.

In a nutshell, the game surprised me in many ways and it was very much an experience to play it. It’s high on my list despite its egregious flaws.

Full review beyond the cut. Here be spoilers!

Ary Learns Blender: Part Two

I’ve finished Section 2 of the Blender course I’ve been following!

I’ve learned about additional editing and controls. One of my earlier tasks was making a plane to see how extruding from faces worked.

Well… kind of?

The crux of the section centered around creating a Mayan pyramid. I had to make the basis of the building at first and added details as the lectures went on.

The pyramid at an earlier stage of the course.

I added a ramp, then stairs, then railings for said stairs. My task afterwards was to customize the top any way I want. It’s hard to say how this came to be, it just happened. I kept toying with the controls until I got the result I wanted.

Same dragon head with a few tweaks, version 2.

Dragon head top, final version. Unlike v1 and v2, this doesn’t have the “eyes” anymore. The building now has a detailed door and a passageway leading down as well. Blender Render image first, OpenGL screenshots after that.

By the time I was done with this model, I ran out of creative juice so nothing else came to my mind in terms of additional creations. That’s it for this section though, I’m looking forward to the next one! I’ve been surprised by myself so far, so I expect my mind to be blown, haha.

Ary Learns 3D Modeling: Part One

It’s been a while since I’ve last posted anything of note. I spent the summer resting and recuperating. Taking a step back after my exams and everything else helped immensely and I’ve been doing better overall.

One thing I promised myself is that I’d work on bettering myself and learn new skills. What surprised me is that I ended up gravitating towards 3D modeling. I had no interest in 3D before and preferred drawing art. On the other hand, I’m not that surprised. Building sets was one of my favorite tasks in the past, so the idea of putting something together was very much attractive. I ended up purchasing a few Udemy courses, installed Blender and began my journey.

Most of the lectures so far centered around learning the interface. Coming off Unity, customizing my layout and moving the camera around in an editor felt familiar. One of my challenges was to put something together using basic meshes, so here’s my attempt at my first creation:

At this point I didn’t realize you can drag objects along the axes (just like Unity), so one lecture later I made a second attempt at modeling something. I decided to go big and modeled my desktop computer + desk!

It took me about 3 hours to create the above. It’s really cool to see how your idea comes to life piece by piece. Making the desk was my favorite part. I cut corners on the keyboard because I didn’t want to add ~100 keys, even with duplication involved. I was eager to get the rest of the set done and not spend so much time on one set piece. I tried modeling my mouse but I couldn’t get it to look right, so I scrapped it and kept the mousepad.

I really like how the final result turned out. I’m excited to learn more and get better at using Blender!
